Taxonomy is the practice of identifying different organisms, classifying them into categories, and naming them. All organisms are classified into distinct groups with other similar organisms, and given a scientific name.

  • Domain: all organisms are broken down into three different groups; Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukaryota.
  • Kingdom: we separate everything into different kingdoms such as animals, plants, fungi, protists, archaea, and bacteria.
  • Phylum:
  • Class
  • Order
  • Family
  • Genus
  • Species

A good mnemonic device is:

Did - Domain

King - Kingdom

Phillip - Phylum

Come - Class

Over - Order

For - Family

Good - Genus

Soup - Species
